Monique Homan’s work investigates perceptual phenomena through material experimentation. Finished objects invite the viewer to experience bizarre movement of light and color within the work, transfixing the viewer into an illusionary and memorizing optical realm. Her practice is guided by an exploration into the “unknowns”, recomposing key functions in her work; light, transparency, reflection, form, and color. This process culminates into a system of investigation for Monique, an obsession she feels drawn to, to try and uncover the infinite variabilities and inspiring material combinations. Experimentation with intuitive parameters, her work primarily subsists of synthetic materials such as resins, rubbers, silicons, and films, in relation to the innate principles of light, gravity, and optical phenomena. When new optical processes/insights/light sculptures are found she then reconfigures this found tech into functional design objects that are exciting and inventive, a stylistic vision suited for a futuristic, experiential space/experience. Monique uses experimental design to behold otherwordly experiences for herself and for others.
